Reader comment on item: What Do Terrorists Want? [A Caliphate and Shari'a]

Submitted by Andy B. (United States), Jul 26, 2005 at 18:12

I agree with Dr. Pipes--the agenda of Islamist-based terrorism couldn't be clearer. For nearly forty years, Islamists have issued ever-changing demands, threats, and excuses for their actions, but their vicious M.O. remained consistent. Almost as bad are the Islamic apologists (as if one could ever offer a rational excuse for indiscriminately butchering innocents).

We are at war with an arrogant, ruthless, morally bankrupt and spiritually-impoverished enemy, every bit as dangerous as the Third Reich and Imperial Japan. They, and those who fund and protect terrorists, should be pursued with the relentless zeal that we demonstrated in defeating the Axis powers of the last century.

The broader question is do we in the US really have the resolve to do what's necessary to fight terror? One could cite our post 9-11 actions in Afghanistan and Iraq as a demonstration of intent, but puzzling behavior by the Bush administration remains: blind support for the creation of what will almost certainly be a terror state in Gaza and the West Bank (Palestine); reluctance or unwillingness to act preemptively in the face of a nuclear Iran (will we have to rely on the Israeli Air Force to do our dirty work for us?), and allowing Syria to function as a terrorist staging area for actions against the US in Iraq.

I'd sleep better at night if I believed that the Bush administration didn't caste a blind eye to the terrorist breeding grounds in Saudi Arabia, the Palestinian Territories, Iran, Syria, and Africa.
