Pope on Islam--surprise?

Reader comment on item: What Do Terrorists Want? [A Caliphate and Shari'a]

Submitted by tonymixan (United States), Jul 26, 2005 at 17:26

The Pope was asked today if Islam is a religion of peace? He said,"I wouldn't like to generalize. It certainly has elements that could make peace prevail; it also has other elements."

I think this is really quite an astounding answer, given all the "dialogue" talk that usually comes out of my Church from Rome. What does Pipes think of this? See Zenit.org.

It is quite similar to what I said when asked the same question by the Associated Press back in April 2003. See http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:-GK3nEwYMxsJ:www.montereyherald.com/mld/montereyherald/5691408.htm+%22whether+he+thought+Bush+should+have+made+the+statement%22&hl=en.
