One minor girl, many Arabs

Reader comment on item: [Pakistani Christians and] A War Against What?

Submitted by Swahili Dinaz (India), Sep 4, 2005 at 10:46

This one needs wide publicity. Marriage for Muslims in India is governed by the Muslim Personal Law, although Muslims have the choice to approach the Civil Court if they so desire, which they rarely do. They are staunchly opposed to the Uniform Civil Code, for obvious reasons. Appeasement ensures that the women continue to be bereft of civil protection. Prostitution as traffic in women is under the Criminal Procedure Code, but who cares when the parents and Qazis connive? This racket in Hyderabad began with the Gulf oil boom in early seventies, and continues unchecked. The maulvis are too concerned at this point about whether people should watch TV, or changing the Code of Dress for woman Tennis pros at the US Open, so that Sania Mirza of Hyderabad is allowed to challenge Maria Sharapova wearing a veil and long skirt! We don't know yet whether 10% of her earnings, as the second-higest paid Indian sportstar, will go for zakat.

In the name of magnificent Islam:
