Tolerating Intolerance?

Reader comment on item: Ban Islam?

Submitted by Tom H. (United States), Aug 29, 2007 at 17:51

It seems to me that countries banning fascist elements of Islam from being preached or taught is no different than what Germany did following WWII with respect to Nazism. Some things are simply too incompatible with a civilized society and peace to be tolerated by thinking people. And perhaps therein lies the problem, apparently not all the citizens of our tolerant Western countries are thinking clearly when it comes to this issue.

The question becomes, "How can those in favor of tolerance and multiculturalism be in support of those elements of a religion that contradict and preach a violent response against those very values?" It should be obvious to any rational observer that to accept such a contradiction is to sow the seeds of our tolerant societies' own demise. The one thing tolerance cannot tolerate is intolerance.
