Reader comment on item: Ban Islam?

Submitted by jennifer solis (United States), Aug 30, 2007 at 20:18

I thank Mr. Pipes for yet again another thought provoking article. Indeed, the efficacy of reducing "the threats of jihad and Shriah by banning the Islamist interpretations of the Koran, as well as Islamism and Islamists", and the examples Mr. Pipes cites is apparent; and we've had no more Islamic attacks on our home soil (although I think The Patriot Act, along with some great institutions in this country have also had alot to do with that). In my opinion, countries like Netherlands and England (well, it's really almost to late for them); if they were to halt Muslim imigration, who could blame them? 16,033 sq. miles; Netherland for the Netherlander. I don't blame them. The scene now remindes me of pre- WW II. Hitler knocking off piece after piece; Islamists hiding among Muslims in that country, this country, another country over here, another over there. What about SJS (Sudden Jihhadi Syndrom) that Mr. Pipes speaks of in other articles?

Truly I recognize what I would characterize as the shame of this country "lumping together" progressive Muslims with Islamists. In my city there is a jewelry store owned and operated by a family that immigrated from Syria. Every Christmas there's a Nativity scene in their shop window; GOD BLESS AMERICA is painted on the shop window year-round. A man from India runs the local Italian restaurant. A neighbor of mine, who's from Bangladesh, describes himself occasionally as a "Protestant Muslim", he says this when he's mad at some situation going on (ex.: the not-to-distant blowup of Hammas/Hesbola and Israel), adding, "I 'protest' everything 'Muslim'!"

In closing, I must say I agree with Mr. Pipes about 85%. There were German immigrants in this country who did not sympathize with Hitler. There were even Americans who did. Each Muslim has their own soul, or mind, whatever you wish to call it..........it's the (hypothetical) 15% I'm concerned about; are they "joined at the hip" so to speak with their moderate Muslim brothers? When does it, how does it, and what circumstance might lead to " SJS?" -JS
