Mr Bader: There is no doubt that during Abbasids, muslims were involved in a lot of research, in philisophy, medicine, astronomy, mathematics and other sciences while europeans were held back by the catholic church.

But this enlightenment had nothing to do with islam. The Abbasid kings were very open minded and financed these studies although most of these scholars were freethinkers, mainly from advanced nations captured by the arabs , and were muslims in name only. This golden period of islam lasted for several centuries until the islamic world took a nose dive into religious fanaticism.
