i'am african american and serving in the us military. to your surprese if a black person turns to islam and they have been unjustly treated or been in prison. most will turn to islam but 50% of the time its the nation of islam.

because they can agree with what that nation points of american society and history. everybody thats in captivity feels held down with no rights and this was the main reason the nation came about during the civil rights times in the us. they use a holy religion to infulence a race when it should people human beings. plus the nation does not follow the same laws in the traditional islam religion. see what happend to macolm x when he found the true islam and got on the right path.

as for myself i come from a christian background. my reason for convert was that all my question was answered through islam. this is just me...as a christian i would never go into a temple or masjid of other faith. i was sound in my belief but being curious had me asking questions in school, family member and elsewhere. my thought was if there are other religions where they come from and what they are about. i looked into judaisism with some jewish friends, i look at buddhism and islam. but islam caught me with just the open mindness of religion. that all people are from God and the quran is not the bible it is not here to replace the bible but to add too. the quran reinforces the gospel of jesus. as a muslim i can pray in any house of God church with my christian familiy, temple with my jewish friends and in a masjid with people of my faith. it doesnt matter to me. i love everyone and thats the real islamic way.
