The attraction Islam holds for African-Americans in trouble

Reader comment on item: If the King of Pop[, Michael Jackson,] Converts to Islam

Submitted by Bookworm (United States), Mar 7, 2006 at 11:57

I found this article about troubled African-Americans converting to Islam especially fascinating, because it meshes well with someone whom I learned from a friend who has spent years ministering in prisons, where conversion to Islam is common. As I blogged a couple of months ago (http://bookwormroom.blogspot.com/2006/01/prisoners-and-islam.html), my knowledgeable friend contends that the conversion is an easy one, since it does not require any change in atittude from the convert:

"It is not a contradiction to be a Muslim and a murderer, even a mass murderer. That is one reason why criminals "convert" to Islam in prison. They don't convert at all; they remain the angry judgmental vicious beings they always have been. They simply add "religious" diatribes to their personal invective. Islam does not inspire a crisis of conscience, just inspirations to outrage."
