Maybe Islamists forced him

While many blacks surround themselves with Nation of Islam, its a common thing, as they are more about blackness, and this Islam thing with them is a sad attempt to revert to their "roots," when in reality, Muhammed and his disciples forces Islam upon blacks the way Christians forced Christianity on blacks, so they're really equivalent.

I think there may be a chance that while in Bahrain, Michael feared Islamist groups would abduct him, and make it a world wide scene of jihad, which Islamists would then rally around and be emboldened, and maybe cause a war. Perhaps he didn't want to die of beheading for the sake of Allah.
