Actually Taj, Taqiya has different origins than those you state...Reader comment on item: Barack Obama through Muslim Eyes Submitted by sara (United States), Sep 7, 2008 at 04:58 Taj, I am surprised that you as a Muslim do not know the origin. Taqiya originated within Shia sect of Islam. as a method of self-preservation as they were a minority who were being persecuted by Sunni Muslims. Sunnis would sometimes force them to curse the House of Ali - believing that no devout Shia could commit such an act . As a result, the practice of Taqiyya was used. In other words, if a Shi'a Muslim's life is in danger, he may lie. Also, Taqiya evolved into an acceptable practice if a Muslim needed to defend Islam or another Muslim. That is why trials involving terror/fundraising cannot go far, because it is acceptable for them to lie to protect against the non-Muslims if they deem Islam or another Muslim to be in danger. Shias justify the practice using the following verse from the Qur'an: "[Yusufali 16:106] Any one who, after accepting faith in Allah, utters Unbelief, except under compulsion, his heart remaining firm in Faith, but such as open their breast to Unbelief, on them is Wrath from Allah, and theirs will be a dreadful Penalty." And the following"[Yusuf Ali 3:28] Let not the believers Take for friends or helpers Unbelievers rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah: except by way of precaution, that ye may Guard yourselves from them. But Allah cautions you (To remember) Himself; for the final goal is to Allah."Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
