Islam is a PATRIARCHAL religion that is passed down to the children; genetics has nothing to do with it; culture and tradition dictate such norms. While the shahadah/tawhid --the oneness of God-- is what separates Islam from Christianity and, conceptually, unites it with Judaism, there is no process at puberty --or any other time-- at which point such a child must openly/publicly recite this.

In Islam there is no choice if you are born into it: to leave it is so heretical that one is either shunned/ostracized or, at the very worst, killed for this transgression. As someone who has spent time in Syria and elsewhere in the Muslim world that is the perception I encountered. Maybe you visited a state called "Syria" on a different planet, certainly not this one... Le Fin.
