Obama viewed as a Muslim-apostate by Muslims

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama through Muslim Eyes

Submitted by Dennis Graves (United States), Aug 25, 2008 at 11:48

Many Muslims evidently consider that under Sharia law 1) Obama was a Muslim because his father was a Muslim and 2) since he never accepted or practiced Islam, he must therefore be an apostate. As an apostate, orthodox Muslims may consider that he should be severly punished, and some may even think he should be killed since that is the penalty for apostacy under a strict Islamist interpretation of the Qur'an.

Obama's Muslim father abandoned the family well before the young Obama was old enough to make an informed decision about religion. When he was old enough to make an informed decision, he chose Christianity. Condemning Obama as an apostate under these circumstances is a good illustration of how some of the precepts of Islam can operate to produce absurd results.

The real issue here is whether Muslims will recognize that this is a precept of their strict religion that simply cannot be accepted by rational people and, if so, perhaps realize that there are many other precepts that also cannot be accepted by rational people.
