Obama good for moderate Muslims?

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama through Muslim Eyes

Submitted by Charles Evans (United States), Oct 9, 2008 at 10:15

First off, Mr. Pipes you are a brilliant scholar and the grandmaster of this issue. I appreciate your ability to ignore political correctness and search for truth. "Militant Islam Reaches America" is fantastic.

You have often stated "Militant Islam is the problem, Moderate Islam is the solution." Is it possible, keeping in mind Bush's error of pursuing 'terror' instead of 'islamism' (and thus going to Iraq instead of dealing with Iran) that Obama may be a better choice simply due to his middle name? In other words, would the moderate Musilim community's identity be more legitimized, and thus more amiable to America and this battle with Militant Islam? Are there any positives to having an "ex-moderate-Muslim" at the helm?

Just a thought. I stand with you and appreciate your years and years of confronting this dangerous ideology honestly; with fact after objective fact and a keen intellect.

Daniel Pipes replies:

Thank you for the kind words. You ask if "Are there any positives to having an "ex-moderate-Muslim" at the helm?" Perhaps so, perhaps not, but that is not my topic. My topic is that Obama has not told the truth about something so elemental as his birth and childhood religion. That's all.
