Obama the vacillator

Reader comment on item: Barack Obama through Muslim Eyes

Submitted by Rebecca Moulds (United States), Aug 25, 2008 at 16:14

There is so much evidence that Barack Obama was born into a Muslim family, practiced Islam as a child and then in his own words, converted to Christianity, that his reticence to finally put a stop to the uncertainty is becoming tiresome. He is obviously trying to play both sides, appealing to Muslims and to Christians.

Some Muslims do not accept one of their own converting to any religion, especially as an adult, therefore they would rather believe that Obama is still Muslim and deliberately close their eyes to his conversion. Can these people be so naiive to believe that he is still Muslim---or are we being hoodwinked here? Many Muslims recognise that what they consider his apostasy is unacceptable in Islam and therefore, condemn him.

The problem lies with Obama: if he refuses to make a final public statement to Muslims about his true religious belief, then the Muslims who have jumped on this bandwagon will continue to think of him as a Muslim. Frankly, I think he likes this and plays on it.

He needs the courage to take a stand and declare himself one or the other and silence this controversy. He is a typical politician, appealing to all sides, wavering on important issues, hoping the final victory will be his----then he will lower the boom and we shall see exactly where he stands.
