Ignorance of Christianity

Reader comment on item: Pope Benedict XVI and the Koran
in response to reader comment: Let me correct you

Submitted by Octavio Johanson (Italy), May 15, 2006 at 02:51

Thanks, Richard, for your correction: it was very much needed. I am going to approach the issue from a different view-point: people are ignorant of Christianity. Someone mentioned Roman Catholicism and Estern Orthodox Christianity. I can tell you that most people think that only Roman Catholics can call themselves 'Christians'. They don't see Protestants and Orthodox as Christians.

The truth is that Roman Catholicism is the largest branch of Christianity, but not the only one. The pope is the most visible Christian leader and he deserves respect. But that does not mean that Protestants and Orthodox cannot be called 'Christians'. Given this lack of information, it is no surprise if people fail to understand what the crusades were all about. Of course, the crusades were not about eastern and western Christians fighting each other. People don't even know who was fighting who! It was ALL CHRISTIANS defending Christiandom from Muslim invaders.
