Ahmad, you are still not saying what we didn't understand, or what we missed. This is the epitome of Muslim ideology, that we are wrong somewhere, no one knows why.

Where did the Jews go wrong?
Where did the Christians go wrong?
What in their teachings is contradictory to seeking God?

You say that we went wrong, but you are not saying how or why or providing any evidence. Unlike what you think, Jesus did not refute the laws of the Jews, he reaffirmed them:

Matthew 5:17-20
"Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them. For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

You say "the message was clear, but they didn't get it"; here, Jesus clearly says that he is fulfilling them. Jesus revealed more to the law, and re-emphasized the important aspects of the Laws of God. Jesus did not say that the Jews were at "variance" with anything, as Muhammad said about the Christians and the Jews.

Muhammad added to the story (even if questionable material), and claimed that there were distortions in the other texts. Jesus did not. What did we miss then? At least we know of one rule the Muslims left, consequently the most important of them all: The Golden Rule.
