Dear John Bedrossian,

What you write about a UN-sponsored subcommittee and hopes you seem to place on it is in my eyes quite unrealistic. The UNO has long since become an inefficient corrupt and inert bureaucratized giant on clay feet, a worthy successor of the League of Nations. It's unable to solve any real problems while it creates many more. Recall the infamous role it played in the Balkans or in Rwanda.

And the problems you are talking about ( peoples' beliefs) are no bureaucratic problems at all. They were not born today by lack of appropriate subcommittees and supervising organs to control the implementation of imams' resolutions on what people should and shouldn't think. For this reason they will not be solved by subcommittees, resolutions, appeals, politburos' votes the like with well-paid scholars and clever and inefficient officials and hired journalists creating the opposite impression ( i.e. the solution is around the corner , just one more meeting, one more initiative, one more trip of the secretary general to the region, one more interview etc.etc. ... and the world will be a better place to live in).

Besides, what kind of conversation and compromise do you expect between e.g. an othodox rabbi and an ayatollah who holds it self-evident that every infidel is impure? Or what sort of common discourse can you imagine between e.g. Serge Trifkovic or Bat Ye'or and a senior member of Al-Azhar university ?

What you outline resembles, in my opinion, one more Kofi Annan-style plan for Northern Cyprus. It can succeed if only we don't mention the Turkish occupation of the island ! ...It's a new Chimaera or a modern unicorn- a fantastic creature with attractive qualities , but alas unable to survive the first encounter with reality!
