We gave in to Iran long ago

Reader comment on item: Deterring Tehran
in response to reader comment: It is the same in Europe

Submitted by Pat (United States), May 11, 2006 at 19:23

We surrendered to Iran back in 1979 when they took over our embassy, an invasion of sovereign US territory.

We never stood up to them again, Ronald Reagan notwithstanding. The US under Ronald Reagan surrendered again in 1983 when the US withdrew from Lebanon in response to truck bombings of our embassy (another act of war) and of US Marines who were there as peacekeepers.

These bombings were carried out by Hezbollah, an arm of the Iranian government. Are we supposed to obliterate Iran? That's the only way to stop them, because their own people won't do the job and Russia and China will block any action in the Security Council. The EU and India are also on Iran's side because they're not willing to confront Iran and they're not willing to make China pay. End result: Iran wins.
