Whistling Past the Graveyard

Reader comment on item: Deterring Tehran

Submitted by L D Cary (United States), May 9, 2006 at 15:29

"Were Europeans, Russians, Chinese, Middle Easterners, and others to act in sync with Washington, it would help mobilize opposition elements in Iran." This is the 3rd way? This is whistling past the graveyard. [If the US and France and others were to act in sync with London, it would help mobilize the opposition elements in Nazi Germany. 1935-36]

Iran will have nuclear weapons. We, like the anti-Nazi powers in pre-WWII, don't have the collective nerve to stop it from happening. China and Russia have a vested interest in a nuclear Iran. Anything that weakens us and the West, strengths them. It is patently unrealistic to expect an international solution to the Iran crisis. Pigs will fly first.

As to the question: "But is there a third, more palatable option?" Yes, but less palatable. The Western powers chose it in opposition to Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan. Wait until total war is the only option.
