Reader comment on item: Deterring Tehran

Submitted by Carmen Waggoner, Ph.D. (United States), May 9, 2006 at 15:26

Past experience indicates that diplomacy does not work with Iran. Muslim public opinion is already anti-American in the US and abroad; it also considers that America is weak and has lost the war in the Middle East. Instead of focusing on loosing oil and on cajoling the ennemy, let us strike hard and fast, "destroying key Iranian installations" and 'terminating Tehran's nuclear aspirations", and let us "secure the Straits of Hormuz".

I will vote for John McCain when he runs for the presidency: I too believe that a nuclear-armed Iran would be a disaster. I also firmly believe that the oil insdustry lobby is too strong and is preventing a complete switch to ethanol; the meager 10% of ethanol added to oil is a ploy to perpetuate the monopoly of Exxon and some other oil barons; their income is obscene and is even increased by the tax breaks they receive in the name of "research"... If Brazil has succeeded replacing oil with cane power, why can't we do the same with corn? Iowa farmers have already proven that it can be done easily and the automobile industry is already producing hybrid vehicles running with either gas or ethanol. Instead of destroying our environment by drilling for elusive oil on land and in oceans, let us vote for a government that will not be used by giant industries, monopolies that continue to feed on the rest of the nation. The Bush dynasty is over; it is time to clean up in the US and in the Middle East.
