Deterrence Requires Force

Reader comment on item: Deterring Tehran

Submitted by yonatan silverman (Israel), May 9, 2006 at 18:03

The trend and the very foundation of the political framework in Iran is not rational. It is all built of fanatic Islamic fantasies and it all revolves around the supreme leadership of Ayatollah Khameini. Hatred and lust for world domination run through the veins of the political system there as democracy runs through the veins of western countries. It defies belief that there is a political solution that will deter Iran from moving ahead and developing nuclear weapons. Iran wants to reshape the power symmetry in the Middle East so that it will be the arbiter of life in the region.

Very powerful countries like China and Russia are positioning themselves to appease Iran's nuclear ambitions. In the same way that Sweden has recently appeased Hamas. The international community is not unified against Iran's lust for nuclear weapons. The US will need to send the proper signal, and may it be in a form whose meaning is indisputable.
