Reader comment on item: "Death to America"

Submitted by David Graham (Canada), Mar 18, 2003 at 07:50

I am a Canadian and a retired twenty year vetran of the Canadian Armed Forces. I am deeply troubled by our current government's policy on supporting our neighbours. The US/Canadain border is the longest undefended boarder in the world. Our two nations share a friendship and history unlike any other in history.

As neighbours we have developed more of a family relationship, and in all relationships squabbles can happen. The current grand standing our our Prime Minister is being done because it costs him nothing, he is an old liberal, with old liberal views and the goat is soon to retire and this slap at our friends, family and neigbhours in the US is just a political tool. Reality is, he knows he let our forces rot and we have little to offer, but in his own words, "The military will always take a backseat to other programs in this nation". This is a biblical case of the blind leading the blind. Our liberal government has done nothing but disarm this country in the name of political expediancy and collecting what it calls peace dividends.

Please do not take commenter Jeff Bercovitch of Montreal, Canada as an example of Canadians. I fear that our nation will be attacked, by terrorists and the cost will be extreme. Then the political leaders will be screaming for support and for the US to defend our nation. But why should they? Our national leaders keep spitting in their face.

I love my country, I served in its armed forces not only for Canadians but for all North Americans. I am troubled that the President has so easily dismissed Canada and her people. We need each other. Family must remain united and allied. Where are American allies? North of your border. If you can simply ignore our government, and it's outdated views you will see your allies have never left your side. The only support I can now offer is my prayers and my quite support. The goverment has ensured we can offer little else in the way of military support. They have either sold it off or let it rust to uselessness. But never make the mistake that we cannot fight, or will not rise up and fight. I take offence at the comments of this Jeff Bercovitch. We are not cowards, our leaders may be, but the citizenry of this country is not. The great wars of recent history prove that. We have earned our badges of honor with blood in WWI, WWII and the Korean War. The Afghan campaign also showed the world what Canada is capable of. We only have so much to use and very little support from a very strange Liberal party.

I have supported the President and verbally bashed professors from a near by University for their silly views of how peace can be achieved. I guess I served them and defended them so that theyto speak their minds. I too agreed that in order for peace to work you need to walk silently, but carry a bigger stick than your potential enemy. And when the time is prudent, use it. To the American people, give us a chance to show our support. We have never failed you in the past, remember who rescued your people out of Terhan. Remember what nation stood by Britian long before your country enterd WWII.

Strike hard and strike fast, and do not repeat history. This time go to Bagdad, regardless of the pressure countries wish to bring to you. Get the job done! God's speed.
