Older terrorist attack? 1975 or 1976

Reader comment on item: "Death to America"

Submitted by Joseph Summerour (United States), Sep 9, 2002 at 08:13

A while back I ran across part of a newspaper article about a bombing at La Guardia airport in NYC that killed a number of people in a baggage handling area. It was late December 1975 or 1976. Does anyone remember this event? Was any group ever held responsible for that attack?

As for the Embassy guard, perhaps Dr. Pipes is right. Unfortunately, some cultures take our restraint and patience as a sign of weakness. This is a consideration as to why we may have to take action against Iraq, even if we don't want to. Witness the cost of inaction in 1979. What is the cost of inaction now? Saddam Hussein has a history of attacking Iran, Kuwait, Israel, and his own citizens. They will not leave us alone.

Also, thank you, Dr. Pipes for reporting the death toll for the 1998 Embassy bombings as 224. Sometimes, some reporters only report the number of Americans dead (12) for those bombings. The 212 Africans (Kenyans, Tanzanians) killed also had human value to their friends and families.

Another act of terrorism that didn't result in deaths, but should be noted, was the March 2001 destruction of ancient Buddhist statues in Afghanistan, as a sign that Islamist intolerance and hatred go beyond the U.S. and Israel.

I am well aware that the U.S. and Israel have made mistakes, but for the most part, both countries essentially want to be "left alone".
