Reader comment on item: Jihad and the Professors

Submitted by A. Ahmado (United Kingdom), Nov 9, 2002 at 04:38

Dear Sirs,
First, I would like to remind everone that, unfortunately, today, every Tom, Dick and Harry can claim he knows what jihad is!

The Arabic word for 'fighting' is 'Kital' (NOT ‘jihad') and is used to mean 'military action' in many chapters of the Quran. The ONLY indication for military action in Islam is to repel miltary action from an aggressor. This context of self-defence is always present for any verse quoting 'Kital'.

"And fight in the way of Allah those fight you, but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allah likes not the transgressors" Chapter 2, verse 190.
In this verse, Allah use the word "Katilu" a verb derived from "Kital".
This verse was the first verse revealed to the prophet of Islam in connection with military action. All the other verses followed the same rule.

Remember a criminal will commit a crime and find a rationale to suit his purpose, be it religion or something else... remember Slobodan and his priest?
