Why is Indonesia over 90% Muslim?

Reader comment on item: Jihad and the Professors

Submitted by Imran Khan (United States), Nov 1, 2002 at 15:36

Dr. Pipes, keep up the good work! SheeraKhan's comments are very relevant. The West did not allow in the Muslims until very recently (only in the last 30 years) whereas India & Indonesia allowed them centuries back.

The question that the Westerners should ask is: Why is Indonesia now over 90% Muslim? Why is Pakistan 98% Muslim? Why did the Bangladeshi minority population go from 45% in 1947 to about 12% in 2002? What happened to all the Jews and Christians in the Middle Eastern Arab countries?

The Professors you describe are lying to themselves and to the Americans. It has become an anathema in the USA to ascribe "evil to anyone or anything" other than Nazis. Even the aliens in our Sci-fi shows have to be good and wise. These Scholars are emotionally incapable to see the new Mein Kampf. I would guess even when a suicidal bomber shows up outside their door they will need to find excuses: People just cannot be that evil, can they?

I will bet that is what the Jews said about the Nazis in 1933; I bet that is what the passengers in the planes flying into the WTC said to themselves.
