This truth is too bitter. Give me a sweet lie instead !

Reader comment on item: A Million Moderate Muslims on the March
in response to reader comment: Modern Turkey-is it really moderate?

Dear James Denney ,

Thanks a lot for the critical post . I wish all our readers, instead of following theTurkish propaganda, thought about the question you ask. In case they are at a loss as the Turkish propagandists have not provided any sweet lies yet to neutralize the bitter taste of truth , let's help them a little :

> Have you read Dr. Speros Vryonis' book, The Mechanism of Catastrophe? It sets out in great detail the pogrom of 1955 in Istanbul by the modern Turks against the remaining Greeks.

By all means reading Greek sources is an excellent way of forming a critical view on Turkey as no one knows the Turks better than their wretched neighbours. I say that although I am fully aware that also Greece has been recently infected by the Eurabian virus too.

> What exactly is meant when one uses the term "moderate Turkish Moslem"?

Dr. Pipes in one of his inimitable rhetorical moments defined it more generally as follows :

" an Islam that is modern, moderate , democratic, liberal, good-neighborly, humane, and respectful of women."

http://www.danielpipes.org/article/4174

This definition provoked a wave of disbelief , scepticism and protests at that time. I am still unable to see how these sweet-sounding adjectives (will ever) fit in the harsh and bloody historical reality called Islam. Anyway a Turkish Islam which is " modern, moderate, democratic, liberal, good-neighborly, humane, and respectful of women" is not in sight yet , even in my most optimistic soul's eyes .

> If the Turkish state is moderate, secular, and democratic, why did this pogrom occur,

The pretext was that in Thessaloniki allegedly the birthhouse of Gazi Mustafa Kemal was in danger. The real cause lay elsewhere , as always . The Turkish aggressive militaristic dictatorship creates plenty of internal problems and violence which can be eased only by directing the internal aggression against an outside object . This time the obvious victims were the Greeks in Constantinople . Thirteen years earlier the notorious "varlik vergisi" tax was chosen to ruin them. Now a Turksih-style Kristall-Nacht pogrom was staged by the miltarists . In 1974 Cyprus was chosen by them . The Kurds are now to follow unless Turkey perhaps chooses Western Thrace to stage a pro-Turkish coup with the numerous local Moslem minority , although a Turksih civil war would be preferable.

> and why has the Orthodox religious school not been reopened at Halki?

Because in this case an Orthodox Turkish citizen might finish it , get a diploma and so become a candidate for patriarchate. You know no doubt that according to the formal agreements only a person with Turkish citizenship can be chosen patriarche . In view of this the Turks want to finish off the Greek Oecumenical Patriarchate by not allowing any Turkish citizen to get the necessary education to become a patriarche . They achieve by "peaceful" means what otherwise would have to be done by violently . But They can't simply have Vartholomaios I killed , even if there are many grey wolves around ready to do that . It would compromise their so successful "secular" progaganda . Nowadays the desired liquidation of the patriachate can't follow the pattern applied in regard to the Metropolitan See of Smyrna in 1922 . They prefer tehrefore a soft murder - so to speak . They purposefully create circumstances which promote their final solution. No one will be formally entitled to follow the present (or the next ) patriarche and so the patriache will simply cease to exist . And it is exactly what they do want - a 100% Moslem monoculture in 0% "secular" Turkey.

> And why does the Turkish government continue to repress the Ecumenical Patriarch, and not admit to the genocides and ethnic cleansings it has perpetrated over the years?

Because the sweet lies on which the entire Ottoman-Kemalist giant stands cannot be debunked without bringing it to a downfall . Truth is a very dangerous agent , you know. Unless jailed it can play havoc with the sweetest , most sacred lie .
