Reader comment on item: Is Turkey Going Rogue?
in response to reader comment: More than 9000 or more than 15 000 ?

Submitted by Iskender (United States), Oct 2, 2011 at 21:10

Indeed, 15 000 is what Ayse Hur says and I stand corrected. The important point here though is not so much the numbers but that the pogrom was well planned by government and paragovernmental organizations and that it was comprehensive. And the other point is that right after signing the treaty of Lausanne in which Turkey pretended to be committed to becoming a secular state, they went on with immediately violating the treaty. It was all done on Ataturk's watch and with his full knowledge until his death in 1938 and then continued under every Turkish government.ecularism means that the government treats all religious minorities the same. This has never happened in the modern Turkish Republic. It is a monstrous lie and that so many Turks believe it today shows how brainwashed they are or how the truth has been hidden from them.
