Turkey has always been rogue

Reader comment on item: Is Turkey Going Rogue?

Is Turkey going rogue? Since its founding in 1923, the modern Turkish Republic has always been a rogue state deep down inside, longing to achieve an idealized Ottoman glory.

This rogueness was controlled initially, but in 1936 Ataturk himself sanctioned the grabbing of the Alexandretta province from French-ruled Syria even though it was majority Arab. Then, in 1974 came the rape of Cyprus. In violation of international agreements which would have allowed Turkey to protect the territorial integrity of this 82% Greek and only 18% Turkish island, Turkey committed extensive ethnic cleansing, unspeakable war crimes (of which it has been found guilty by the European Court of Human Rights) and has installed an apartheid segregating the Turkish Cypriots in the North and destroying the economy. About half of the Turkish Cypriots supposedly saved by the Turkish military have emigrated and those remaining have to share with uneducated and landless masses imported from the Anatolia. No other country recognizes this illegal puppet regime based on land and property theft.

Meanwhile under the guise of so-called secularism, Turkey has violated the rights of all its non-Muslim minorities as well as its sizeable Kurdish and muslim minority since 1923.

Turkey has been hell-bent on violating human rights and being the neighborhood bully.

It is only that now, the arrogant and beligerent leadership of Turkey is looking for bigger targets for its traditional rogueness: Israel, its former ally.

They think that by picking on Israel, they can become the leader of the broader region.

You cannot trust Turkish governments.
