Reader comment on item: Is Turkey Going Rogue?

Submitted by Jacob Thomas (United States), Sep 27, 2011 at 14:56

Dear Mr. Pipes,

I've always enjoyed your writings ever sinc I read your IN THE PATH OF ALLAH (FI SABEEL ALLAH)

I'm not surprised at the regress that has been going on in Turkey everr since Mustapha Kemal Ataturk died in 1938. His "laicisation" of the Turksih Republic was accomplished by force; his "revolution" succeeded because the Turkish Army Officer Corps was in favour of his secularism.

Unfortunately, the masses of Turks in Anatolia continued to maintain their Islamic traditions,so that long after Ataturk's death, the slow revival of Islam began. By 1949, Turks were allowed o go on the Hajj to Mecca, and eventually the Koran was being recited in he mosques in Arabic, and the muezzins were intoning 5 times a day "Allahu Akbar".

Unless a genuine reformist movement (down up) takes place, the new Islamist-run Turkey will be worse than the old Ottoman Empire!

Thanks again for your insightful analysis of the emerging "rogue" Turkiye Cumhuriyeti.
