A Contrary Opinion

Reader comment on item: Is Turkey Going Rogue?

Submitted by Shel_TR (United States), Sep 27, 2011 at 12:34

Writing in the National Post, Hugh Segal recently offered a rather opposite opinion (http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2011/09/20/hugh-segal-the-world-needs-more-turkey/).

I'd be very interested in Daniel Pipes' response to that article. I suspect that he'd question Segal's characterizations of Turkey as a moderate, secular nation. Whereas historically those attributes were plainly evident, Erdogan's regime now seems to be pulling Turkey in a very different direction.

Daniel Pipes replies:

The article is not only out of date, focusing on the Turkey of a decade ago, but it includes mistakes both small ("nine Turkish citizens") and large (that Turkey helped Jews during the Holocaust more than did the United States).
