Erdogan Takes Turkey Into (Militant) Islam
Reader comment on item: Is Turkey Going Rogue?

The rapidity with which Erdogan has recklessly taken Turkey into confrontation with not only Israel but Europe and very likely the United States has caught everybody flat-footed, except Israel. It's not at all clear that there has been even the start of the necessary consciousness shift to this whilly unprovoked devlopment.
Who would have thought this mousy-chinned fellow would have become such a chest-beating militant for Islam so quickly and across such a wide range of issues?
I think Pipes is absolutely right that Turkey has become almost as dangerous as Iran. I think he is also right that Turkey may follow the route of Venezuela and Argentina in terms of economic mismanagement. Although I do not like to wish it, i hope so if that turns out to be most effective response to his adventurism.
As Europe appears ready to continue its blind appeasement of all Islamic aggression, here's something else to bear in mind. If Europe can't rally to support of Israel in this unprovoked confrontation, perhaps it will pay attention to Erdogan's comments, regarding the domestic aggression of Islamic culture in Europe, when he says: "The Mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets, and the faithful our soldiers."

Daniel Pipes replies:
I question that the Israelis were prepared for the shift that has taken place.
To offer one piece of evidence: I spoke at the Herzliya Conference on Dec. 3, 2002, exactly one month after the AKP came to power. My warnings that Islamists had just won a famous victory met with nearly universal disagreement.
More recently, every stage of the degeneration in relations, from the insulting of Shimon Peres to the continued sale of sophisticated weaponry, has found the government of Israel unprepared.
