AKP is only pro-Western because is the party in power. Daniel Pipes is well aware of the historical solidarity between prior secular governments and the West, why is he now claiming secular Turks are in fact anti-Western? They haven't changed. But the geopolitics have:

America needs a new regional power to contain Iranian encroachment into Mesopatiamia. Ankara seems to be up for the alliance, but only if Washington chooses Turkey over Israel. ...
