I agree with you, any elitism at this point is counterproductive.

Also, any progressive changes made in the Arab/Muslim world must come from within and not be imposed by any other country.

The incredibly sudden changes being made are coming mostly from women, who are willing to fight for changes and rights, yet within the context of their own religion and culture. There are positives in both, that cannot replace the West, but rather complement it.

Trust me, the elitism and fundamentalists come from both sides, and equally negative.
