Somali cabbies in Cleveland

Reader comment on item: Don't Bring That Booze into My Taxi

Submitted by Ron Dodson (United States), Oct 26, 2006 at 22:16

While doing some research, I ran across this article. Here in Cleveland, Ohio our powers-that-were licensed two out-of-town cab companies in 2002. USA and ABC were both Somali owned companies which started bringing their own drivers from Columbus, Ohio. Needless to say, in less than two years they had pretty much destroyed the cab business at the airport.

It's so bad now that the new airport director is setting up an exclusive cab concession. The problems were allowed to fester through lack of enforcement of existing rules and allowing the Somalis to bend other rules in the name of "religious tolerance".

We're going to get them out at the expense of a lot of honest cabbies who will no longer be allowed to work the airport. I noticed that the city of Minneapolis is increasing the number of cab licenses, so maybe our displaced Somalis will find a new home.

I GUARANTEE, that if you don't get a handle on this problem now, they'll have you by the "short and curlies" by 2008. Stop coddling them and enforce the rules on the books! Of course you'll hear cries of "foul" and "discrimination". One American custom they've picked up on real fast is how to play the race card.

Don't they know there's a civil war going on in their country? Why don't they go back home and fight it?
