Reader comment on item: Don't Bring That Booze into My Taxi

Submitted by Daniel Sieradski (Israel), Oct 11, 2006 at 06:07

Mr. Pipes,

I take this to mean you are, of course, in favor of the NAACP's lawsuit against a NY dental clinic for closing on the Jewish Sabbath.

Clearly no preference should be given to Muslims, Jews or Christians in the free practice of their religion.

To wit, certainly neither prayer or Creationism has any place in our public schools, nor nativity scenes on municipal property. But seeing how taxis are privately property (though licensed by the state taxi & limo commission) we should probably require kosher and hallal restaurants (which much be approved by health boards) to sell pork, seeing how the absence of pork from the menu would offend those who do not share the owners' religious beliefs.

Don't you agree?

Daniel Pipes replies:

I am in favor of freedom of commerce. I don't favor existing regulations on taxi drivers but they are there, and once there, have to be applied equally.
