Segregation is segregation

Reader comment on item: Don't Bring That Booze into My Taxi

Submitted by Juan Paxety (United States), Oct 11, 2006 at 10:49

When I grew up in the American Southeast during the 1950s and 1960s, some people were refused cab service because of the color of their skin. Some of the white cab drivers quoted the Old Testament and interpreted it as saying black folks were to be the slaves of others and, thus, were not to be allowed into white society. Thus, they had a religious reason to refuse cab service to some people.

As a society, we were horrified by racial segregation and outlawed it. Christian theologians objected to the Bible being used as an instrument of separation. I don't see this religious segregation as any different. If Western liberal society means anything, it means that we should fight segregation of all forms.
