Small incidents but rather telling

Reader comment on item: Don't Bring That Booze into My Taxi

Submitted by Stefaan Mertens (Belgium), Oct 10, 2006 at 13:13

Personally, I'm not inclined to demonize certain customs of muslims, I'm not into witchhunts. I know for a fact that most muslims (99% or whatever) are indeed peaceful, decent people. I only drink occasionally and yes, i could do without alcohol.

But a taxidriver refusing a customer simply because he or she is carrying some kind of alcoholic beverage seems to me a little bit over the top. And refusing a blind person because of the guiding dog, well.. Man's best friend apparently is not so appreciated in islam. It figures. I'm not sure that these people realize how - in this case - their principles result in this rather blunt, haughty and unsympathetic attitude. It's always the same thing: just like in communism (an association that i often tend to make) it's 'the system' that counts and people have to submit to that system otherwise you're no good. It's too ideological, too oppressive, too 'big brother' - like, etcetera..

Submitting....
