Reader comment on item: Don't Bring That Booze into My Taxi
in response to reader comment: Parallels with refusal to perform abortions

Submitted by jack hawkins (United Kingdom), Oct 12, 2006 at 07:13

If you actually knew the specifics, you would know that in most countries with legal abortion (and I only have experience of the UK) there has always been a "conscientious objection clause". This is can be evoked any anyone, and certainly not exclusively Catholics or Christians. The personal involvement in terminating a foetus cannot in any way be deemed like carrying alcohol in a taxi.

The number of things which are against the Koran are so numerous and all-encompassing, its puzzles me why people with such strong religious convictions do not move to Saudi Arabia or another Muslim country. I would not go to Saudi Arabia to work because I would find their regime and lifestyle repugnant, and no amount of money would change my mind.

A doctor refusing to participate in abortion is not imposing his religion on anyone else, since (in the UK anyway) they have an obligation to refer the patient to another doctor. This too may offend their sensibilities, but it is required of a medical practitioner. Taxi drivers should also be required to carry passengers and their luggage.
