Reader comment on item: The Vatican Confronts Islam

Submitted by M.A. Rubinstein (United States), Sep 15, 2006 at 09:32

The coments of the Pope given at an academic seminar seem careful and well attributed. He is an intellectual as well as a religious (and political) leader and he expressed his sense of the difference between two faiths rooted in the same monotheistic tradition. Given the nature of world poltics to day and the rise of radical and violent Islam, he comments are to the point. Samule Huntingto was chastised by liberals for his book on the clash of civilizations but he was correct when he wrote it in the 90's and the new millenium is demonstrating that point. We are not moving toward one world culture--an absurd concept given the deep differences between culures and civilizations--but toward a divided world of cultueral values and ones antagonistic to each other. Even in Islam such deep divisions exist. This week how many Siites killed sunnis and sunnis killed shiites in Iraq? Wapons in the world of 2006 and the dirty business which should remain where it started in the desert states is spreading to a larger world that does not want it.

The Pope is major figure in the world and represents a religon with a long tradition of antagonism to Islamand this is all to the good. Let him use his bully pulpit and not apologise for the accuracy of his words and the power of his citations and viewpoints. what is going to happen??? fatwah will be issued against him???? again I say Samuel Huntington , you called it right......bravo
