Appeasement Unappreciated

Reader comment on item: The Vatican Confronts Islam

Submitted by mad-muhaa (Indonesia), Jul 6, 2006 at 20:50

Reciprocity was not alien at all in former Islam, whose warriors were accustomed to trading slashes with themselves and infidels. Modern moslems, however, have erroneously taken other people's indifference to physical fightings as a sign of triumph; while most other cultures mingle with each other by virtues of advanced communication and technologies, large parts of moslems live in utter ignorance of the underlying cultural intercourse -- they either have no resources to participate, or are just grasping the butt end due to the barrage of garbage offered in media and the internet.

Although they have themselves to blame (self-censorship by filtering every piece of information through the thin strings of 7th century nonsense that is Koran; electing belligerent leaders during the formation of their national countries after western powers got bored colonializing lands, and not replacing them with intelligent leaders), moslems cannot help feeling superior in their inferiority. By always resorting to premedieval authorities, Koran and Hadiths, as the final judge, moslems find comfort for being different -- though bad and incomprehensible by today's standards, they are ancient and therefore venerable. Sciences are cherry picked with much emphasis on abstract and "safe" studies (mathematics, chemistry) while topical branches (physiology, astronomy) are severely censured to most basics, often to be browbeaten by koranic "truths."

Thus evolution is understood by the moslem majority to simply mean "your ancestors, the apes" and rightly rejected. Only when some bizzare incidents seem to support their opinion did they acknowledge it -- like the ridiculous claim that Neil Armstrong heard the prayer call up on the moon, a joke circulating for years and still persists to live in most moslem mind. The Chinese, Japanese, Indians have their ways, too -- but they easily accept that others may have different views. And they don't pretend theirs are the only correct One to be imposed upon the whole universe, partly by recognizing the "now" factor. Moslems live in ancient codes, so let's honor it by the same. Why call them "muslim" as if the old terms "moslem, mussulman, mahommedan" weren't perfectly clear. So is "Qur'an" in place of "Koran."
