Thumb in JPII's ecumenical eye

Reader comment on item: The Vatican Confronts Islam

Submitted by DL (United States), Jul 6, 2006 at 10:01

Did not the late pope, John Paul II, say Muslims and Catholics have the same god, and that all were his children? Recall the '86 spiritual shindig where JPII the pope invited not only Muslims but Buddhists, Shintoists, American Indian medicine men, voodoo witchdoctors and others. Each offered prayers from the podium, and at one point all prayed together to the god the late pope said each was worshipping, just in different ways. So what's all this, then? Isn't this saying John Paul was naive about Islam? How can this current pope and his staff contradict the previous pope? Which pope are Catholics supposed to believe? Because they're contradicting each other, you can't believe both.
