- Too many of us remember that the Vatican had little to say about the Holocaust of the Third Reich.

- Like the Pope who calls for an end to war every Christmas while the world collectively yawns, Vatican statements about Muslim treatment of Christians means little

It seems very 'trendy to attack the Vatican for failing to invade Germany and single-handedly liberate the occupied countries during World War II. But contrary to the belief of many they didn't have a hotline to God that they could use in quite the same way as that employed by Commissioner Gordon when the services of Batman were required. They may have had a Batsignal but it seems logical that that this was confiscated by the ITALIAN GOVERNMENT - who happened to be allies of Germany at the time and who also, curiously enough, shared a very common border with the Vatican City. In fact, one might almost say that the Vatican City is INSIDE Italy!! They did not have the luxury of another country or sea to act as a buffer zone. What was the US excuse during this time?

Such criticism begs the question of the US as why it took them a full 4 YEARS to come to the aid of the British who were four YEARS faster in coming to the aid of occupied Europe. One can justifiably say that the Vatican did considerably more during this period, despite being IN Europe, than the US ever did and that fears for the millions of interned Catholics were a possible consideration for Pope Pius. What's to criticise? What was FDR's excuse? The US didn't see fit to become directly involved until it was directly attacked. Given this historical apathy, which no number of gung-ho war movies ever seem to reflect upon, you presumably also have an 'axe to grind' with any statements of foreign policy the George Bush might make. Presumably your logic means that you believe that the US has little or no right to offer any kind of statement regarding the actions (real or imagined) of any sovereign state outside of it's own internationally recognised borders and that, if it does make such a statement, it bears no more authority than, say, the Vatican, for example?..

Have a nice day
