Reader comment on item: The Vatican Confronts Islam
in response to reader comment: Thumb in JPII's ecumenical eye

Submitted by DL (United States), Jul 6, 2006 at 19:34

John Paul was in error on one fundamental point. Because all the other religions - including Islam - JPII met with in '86 contradicted his own (and yours, I presume) at the most fundamental levels, they could not have all be correct; they could not have all led to the god JPII said they led to because they all offer different gods and different paths to those gods. That's simple logic. So is the position of Rome *now* to say that Islam is actually not a religion that leads to God in any sense? If it is, that's an improvement over the earlier pope since Muslims have no use for Christ...and without Christ, none can come to God, according to the Bible. This, I thought, was an elementary teaching of the Roman Catholic church. But John Paul apparently never believed that, else '86 would not have happened and he wouldn't have made the nonsense pronouncements he made then.
