Banning of Pork

Reader comment on item: Is Turkey's Government Starting a Muslim Reformation?
in response to reader comment: Sharia

Krista,

I did read an article on this through the BBC - sitting here in America it can be difficult to get much of the parochial news from other parts of the world. Anyhow, Yes- there does seem to be some attempt to ban the sale - the current government is taking the position that it is not sharia but a matter of meeting EU standards - I personally have my doubts as to the veracity of the governments position - but from what I read it appears the ban will be lifted shortly - I hope that this is the case - if not there will be some very unhappy middle-class Turks regardless of religion.

I do take your point - I would just note that these are the kinds of things that the average everyday person in the Middle East must deal with - no one denies that there are those who would try to impose their views across the board - they must be exposed and opposed whenever possible - but note there are those who oppose them and in this case it appears they will be successful.
