Reforming Islam

Reader comment on item: Is Turkey's Government Starting a Muslim Reformation?

Submitted by Janusz Kowalik (United States), May 21, 2008 at 20:04

The core principles of Islam contained in Quran are not reformable. Muslims believe that Quran contains the literal words of Allah and consequently no changes are possible. On the other hand, hadith that describes stories and sayings of Muhammad can be interpreted and modified. But even hadith reformation is limited . They can be unified or made consistent but not deleted or contradicted.

The key problem Muslims face in this century is their lack of education, illiteracy and regressive social organizations where religious clerics tell people what they shoulod think and do in every situation. As long as Muslims will not learn how to think for themselves rather than follow religious leaders the prospect of Islam real reformation will be illusive and not achievable in practice
