Reader comment on item: Is Turkey's Government Starting a Muslim Reformation?

Submitted by George E. Rittenhouse (United States), Jun 4, 2008 at 13:58

I don't know where "Spengler" gets the idea that the Jewish and Christian Scriptures were revised over time, but he's wrong. True, Interpretations have and do vary, but the canons of both the Old and New Testaments have been fixed for a long, long time.

Comparing the Turkish effort to the Protestant Reformation is an error. In modern liberal theological thought, the term "reform" in essence means "secularize." That, of course, is what the Turks are doing. Certainly we see long-standing secularist movements in Christianity and Judaism. But, the Protestant Reformation in Christianity was - and remains - at root, a "back-to-the-Bible" movement, exactly the opposite of secularization. The equivalent in Islam would be the Wahaddists (sic) and their ilk.

All of these folk waiting for Islam to "modernize," are seeking the secularization of Islam. Ain't gonna happen, folks.
