Reader comment on item: Is Turkey's Government Starting a Muslim Reformation?

Submitted by Rebecca Moulds (United States), May 22, 2008 at 10:07

If it wasn't so serious, it would be comical that any one government could assume control of a religion and "modernize" it. There is nothing more foolish than for man to be tricked into believing something that is not.

Contrary to comparing this to the Christian Reformation, this attempt to reinterpret Islam to fit in with the 21st Century seems morally inappropriate, especially as it emanates from a government that suppresses freedoms in beliefs other than Islam. So much disparity over how Islam should be interpreted indicates a lack of confidence in the very believers of this religion.

Let us sincerely hope that the Turks will not be conned into allowing their government to control their minds, that each individual uses his or her own God-given intelligence to pursue their own paths to freedom.
