Disagree somewhat

Reader comment on item: Is Turkey's Government Starting a Muslim Reformation?
in response to reader comment: AKP REGIME IS ISLAMIZING A SECULAR COUNTRY NOT, REFORMING A RELIGION

Secular Turk wrote "There can be no true 'Moderate' Islam other than Ataturk's secular-democratic Turkey and the US State Dept gets it all wrong by currently supporting AKP's machinations in Turkey".

Actually, the following did have the concept of secular, democratic Islam:

  • Maulana Abdul Hamid Bhashani (1880-1976), of Tangail; admittedly, only as a political "outsider"
  • Mujibur Rehman (1920/03/17-1975/08/15), first leader of independent Bangladesh--though it was cut short by his murder
  • Hasina Wajed (born 1947/09/28), daughter of Mujib, Bangladesh PM 1996-2001
  • Khaleda Zia (born 1946/08/15), widow of Ziaur Rehman who was dictator of Bangladesh 1976-1981 (and prior to 1971, a soldier of Pakistan Army--rebelled when targetted in "Operation Searchlight"); she also served as PM 1991-1996 and 2001-2007
of course, in all the above cases, it was due to "Bengaliness" dominating over Islam (and may break down if a Chakma or Mizo--from CHT areas--tries running for top post, as this would be unlikely to be permitted by Bengalis).
