They have still the lingering damage of the following to overcome, so they have to do a sales pitch:

  • Iran's fatwa (also copied by many Sunnis) against Salman Rushdie for "Satanic Verses" (FYI, the book is actually best described as "National Enquirer meets L. Ron Hubbard meets Stephen Hawking") and their ongoing issue with it (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6225428.stm, where Pakistan's current Religious Affairs Minister, Ijaz ul-Haq--also known unofficially in Canada since 1984 as "Minister of DUI's"--is known to have voiced his objections to Rushdie's being knighted***)
  • 9/11
  • Collaboration of Arab Muslims (especially "Palestinian" leader Haj-amin Husseini) with Nazis in WW2, and lack of remorse over such to this day
***Another little fact: Rushdie is a UK citizen and was formerly a citizen of India--never of Pakistan (or any other third country). So, the only country which could even theoretically (if it allowed true dual-citizenship, which it doesn't) object to Rushdie's peerage is India.
