Reader comment on item: Is Turkey's Government Starting a Muslim Reformation?

Submitted by Amitabh Tripathi (India), May 28, 2008 at 11:32

Dr Pipes has produced another very useful piece. Like every other article, this one is also invaluable as far as information is concerned. Question which has been raised in this column is very crucial and I am not ready to jump to any conclusion whether this project is going to happen a milestone in reformation of Islam.

On several occassions earlier I had frankly expressed my apprehension about process of reformation in Islam. Islam is in its nature gives very narrow scope for those tendencies which are in consonace with modern tendencies. Finally this project has been initiated by a political party whose adherence to moderate Islam is always in doubt.

Dr Pipes on various occassions has catgorically stated that Turkey under Erdogan is marching towards Islamism, and in my view this new project would open the door for Islamists to adopt more deceptive pilicies to make Islamist movement successful. Already we have several Islamist figures who are in the name of interfaith dailouge or with other menas trying to reach non-Muslims with their theory of Islam is the soulution of every problem with quran and hadith as an ideal guide.

We have to take things in right perspective. We should judge the intention of any Islamic reform in this background whether so called refomist initiative is ready to leave the theory of Islam is the solution of every problem and Islamic supremism if this condition is not fufilled it means any iniative of interfaith dailouge or Islamic reform is nothing than a deceptive measure to embolden Islamist movement.
